San-Ginés-Regatta:

140 nautical miles against the trade winds

Every year, the toughest crews and yachts of both islands meet for this race from Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) to Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote.

Starting late in the afternoon with the prevailing North-Easterly wind, the yachts sail close-hauled for some 90 miles until they reach the narrow passage between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura the following morning.

Here the wind usually becomes tricky and can blow from any direction, until we reach smooth waters in lee of Lanzarote. From there we start the final sprint to Arrecife, usually a shy reach with strong winds.

With our Bavaria 40, we start in the 'familiar' class which is for all yachts without IMS measurement.

In this class light wind sails are not permitted (there would be no use for them on this route anyway), and ships must be equipped with at least one furling sail.

Win!
